98.3 KZGL - The Z

KZGL (98.3, The Z) – Mayer, AZ – 8/31/06

kzgl

KZGL was a Modern Rock-formatted station that served Northern and North-Central Arizona.  It was originally heard on 95.9 FM in Cottonwood.

However, following the sale of Oldies/Classic Hits-formatted KKLD 98.3 FM (Prescott Valley) from Yavapai Broadcasting to Riviera Broadcast Group, KZGL and KKLD swapped frequencies (the call letter change occurred on 7/31/06 per Rec Net). In addition, 98.3’s transmitter moved closer to Phoenix – its new city of license became Mayer.

These changes were being made in preparation for a format change that was linked to the sale of another station. Emmis Broadcasting had sold KKFR (Rhythmic CHR “Power 92.3”) in Phoenix to Bonneville International. Bonneville had announced that 92.3 FM would become News/Talk KTAR-FM. Riviera Broadcast Group acquired the intellectual property of KKFR, but needed to find a new frequency for the station. And so Power 98.3″ was born on 9/18/06.

This aircheck was recorded about three weeks prior to that change – it is a sample of KZGL and its Modern Rock format during its brief time on 98.3 FM. Amusingly, as heard towards the beginning of the aircheck, it seems that the station had plans to air a “stunt” format (consisting of theme songs from TV shows). But this lasted all of five minutes…”98.3, The Z”, resumed immediately afterwards.

The KZGL call letters are now linked to Active Rock “Eagle 103.7” in Flagstaff.
