107.5 KQKS - KS107.5

KQKS (KS107-5) – Denver – 2/3/97 – George McFly

Recorded 18 years ago today, this is a sample of “The New KS107-5, The Sweet Beat of Denver” shortly after its move (and signal upgrade) from 104.3 (KS104). To promote the change, the station was running a “cash cow” contest in which listeners were asked to call in upon hearing the sound of a cow (featured on the aircheck), and say “I made the moooooove to KS107-5” if they were the correct caller. KQKS claimed that it was “the biggest cash giveaway in the history of Denver radio.”

This is one of my favorite airchecks, primarily for the station’s outstanding engineering (great processing) and production elements (voiceovers, sweepers, and jingles). Their approach to Rhythmic CHR was upbeat, without sounding “ghetto”. It includes a call from a listener wondering if the personality (George McFly) is the same George McFly she heard on Chicago’s B96 (WBBM-FM).

KS107-5 seemed to be thoroughly enjoying taking shots at (lower-powered) competitor KJMN (Jammin’ 92.1), indirectly referring to it as a “Denver radio station wannabe.” And it apparently worked, as KJMN quickly bailed on the format – apparently within 2 months of this aircheck, according to the KQKS Wikipedia page.

We have another KQKS aircheck recorded on this same day as well.
