WJMX 103.3 (103X) – Cheraw/Florence, SC – 4/21/04 – Dennis Davis

Per Wikipedia, the station currently known as 103X debuted in July 1979 on 103.1 FM, branded as “Z103”. It has generally remained with the CHR format in the 40+ years that have passed. As heard on this aircheck, at this point, 103X put an emphasis on rock, alternative and rhythmic pop selections, with less focus on R&B and hip-hop, in comparison to other Top 40 outlets at the time.

Open House Party – from KRQQ (93.7 KRQ) – Tucson, AZ – 2004

Most likely recorded sometime in 2004, this is a brief sample of the long-running Saturday night program “Open House Party” as heard on KRQQ (93.7 KRQ) in Tucson, AZ. Included is an interview with JC Chasez, formerly of teen act N*SYNC, at the point when he was in the midst of his solo career.

KNRJ (Energy 92.7 & 101.1) – Payson/Phoenix, AZ – 1/10/04 – Pistol Pete

“If you can’t hear us at work…get a new job…” In January 2001, Big City Radio launched all-Dance formatted “Energy 92-7 & 5″ on a trio of signals in suburban Chicago. A year and a half later, Sierra H Broadcasting debuted the very similar “Energy 92-7 & 101-1″ on KAZL (eventually KNRJ) in Payson, AZ — with a simulcast on 10-watt K224CJ in Phoenix. With Big City Radio in financial dire straits, Energy 92-7 & 5 ended in early January 2003. But its Arizona spinoff managed to survive for 6 years — which is about 5 1/2 years longer than most people would probably have predicted. This aircheck was recorded 12 years ago yesterday, and (in my opinion) represents the era in which the station sounded best.

KKDL (106.7 KDL) – Dallas/Fort Worth – 7/5/04

Recorded 11 years ago this month, here is a montage of a great-sounding but short-lived attempt at making the Dance format work in Dallas/Fort Worth, nearly two years after its debut. Left intact is a humorous promo indicating a flip to “The Medical Channel” the following month if listeners didn’t support KDL’s advertisers. Per Wikipedia, later in the year, the station began moving in a Rhythmic CHR direction as it attempted to target young Hispanic listeners.
