WBPM (B94) – Kingston/Poughkeepsie, NY – 11/14/98

WBPM (B94) in New York’s Hudson Valley is one of the most unique stations I’ve ever heard. Musically, it offered an unfocused Rhythmic CHR format that featured many not-so-mainstream Dance selections.  Production-wise, it used dated jingles and sweepers — presumably from the station’s glory days in the 1980’s — voiced by the legendary Charlie Van Dyke. This montage of the station was recorded 15 years ago this week. Apologies for the overmodulated audio.

WXXP (Party 105) – Long Island, NY – 9/11/98 – Vic the Latino

Recorded 15 years ago this week, this is a sample of Long Island’s Party 105 just a few months after its debut. The station offered an aggressive but balanced Rhythmic CHR format and was voiced by the legendary Mitch Craig at this time. Per Wikipedia, Party 105 has undergone numerous format tweaks and call letter changes over the years.

WHTZ (Z100) – New York – 5/13/98 – Kid Kelly

Many thanks to Rory Francisco for contributing this aircheck and the detailed description below! 1998 was a great year for Top 40 music and Z100’s renaissance after their ill-fated “alternative” years (late 1993 to mid 1996). Z100 veteran Kid Kelly was hired back as the night DJ in the fall of 1997, replacing Lukas (who went to late nights at Z100 for a few months and  then left to do mornings on KDND Sacramento). Kid isn’t quite as high energy as he was in 1990 (search YouTube for “Kid Kelly Z100” for that incredible video aircheck) but still had very much the same sound as he did in Z100’s pre-alternative days.

CKEY (FM 101 The Planet) – Niagara Falls, ON / Buffalo NY – 2/9/97 – Chris Sheppard

In the mid to late 90’s, CKEY offered a dance music-heavy Rhythmic CHR format branded as “FM 101 The Planet”. This is a sample of the “Pirate Radio” program hosted by Chris Sheppard.  Sheppard shares a great deal of knowledge about the music being played on this show. CKEY now offers a Mainstream CHR format as CFLZ “Z101.1”.

WSPK (K104) – Poughkeepsie, NY – 11/26/99 – Danny Valentino

The Hudson Valley’s heritage CHR (one of the best in America, IMHO), during the station’s “Most Wanted” segment.
