WPLJ (Mojo Radio 95.5 FM) – New York – 6/21/91 – AJ Hammer

**New York City’s 95.5 WPLJ will end its current programming format at 7pm EDT today (Friday 5/31/19), following a sale from Cumulus to Educational Media Foundation. We will be featuring airchecks of this longtime CHR/Hot AC station from the past 30+ years throughout this week.** Per Wikipedia – as a final attempt to find success with the CHR format, WPLJ rebranded as “Mojo Radio” in April 1991, shortly after hiring Scott Shannon as morning show host. Four months later, the station began shifting towards Adult Top 40; by February 1992, it had evolved to Hot AC and began calling itself simply “95-5 PLJ”.

This is a sample of Saturday night high-energy mixshow programming from the late 1990’s, as broadcast on one of America’s legendary CHR stations.

WNSR (“FM 105.1”) – New York – 11/14/97 – Karen Carson

105.1 FM in New York went through numerous formats in the late 1990’s. This is a montage of the station during a period when, according to The Format Change Archive, the station transitioned from Modern AC back to Hot AC, and called itself simply “FM 105.1”.

WKTU (103.5 The New ‘KTU) – New York – 11/13/01 – Broadway Bill Lee

In February 1996, Country WYNY flipped to WKTU, offered what we now call a Rhythmic AC format, and went from worst to first in one rating book – an absolutely remarkable feat for any radio station, particularly in America’s #1 market. This is a sample of the station almost six years after its debut.

WHTZ (Z100) – New York – 9/27/98 (“PLANET Z”)

This is a sample of late night, high-energy mixshow programming from the late 1990’s, as broadcast on one of America’s legendary CHR stations.

WQHT (Hot 103) – New York – 4/29/87 – Bill Lee

Recorded 28 years ago today, this is – in my opinion – the best and most successful example of a Dance CHR station in the United States. Hot 103 debuted in August 1986 and became Hot 97 (on 97.1 FM) in September 1988. Additional, very detailed information about the history of Hot 103 can be found on Wikipedia.

WKTU (103.5 The New ‘KTU) – New York – 3/30/99 – Diane Pryor

In February 1996, Country WYNY flipped to WKTU, offered what we now call a Rhythmic AC format, and went from worst to first in one rating book – an absolutely remarkable feat for any radio station, particularly in America’s #1 media market.
