CKEY (FM 101 The Planet) – Niagara Falls, ON / Buffalo NY – 4/20/97 – Chris Sheppard

In the mid to late 90’s, CKEY offered a dance music-heavy Rhythmic CHR format branded as “FM 101 The Planet”. This is a sample of the station during mixshow programming, hosted by Dance music expert Chris Sheppard.

CIDC (Hits 103.5) – Toronto – 4/20/98

According to Wikipedia, CIDC (licensed to Orangeville, ON) has been programming some form of Rhythmic-oriented CHR since 1995. This is a sample of the station from April 1998, shortly after it had evolved from “Hot 103.5” to “Hits 103.5”. While the addition of R&B and pop tracks accompanied the name change, as heard on this aircheck, the station still offered Dance music programming at this time.

CING (Energy 108) – Toronto – 2/28/97

For several years in the early to mid 1990’s, Toronto’s Energy 108 offered a cutting-edge Dance music format, making it a favorite among Dance radio enthusiasts. However, by 1997, the station’s ownership changed hands, and the format eventually evolved to Mainstream CHR.  This brief aircheck (seemingly one of the few in existence) was presumably recorded close to the beginning of that transition. It features snippets of the station’s “Top 50 Countdown” and “All Retro Dance Edition” programs. More information can be found at Wikipedia.

CIMX (89X) – Windsor, ON / Detroit, MI – 1/29/92 – Skinner

This is a sample of longtime Modern Rocker 89X from its earlier days. More information about the station can be found at Wikipedia.

CKDX (Power 88-5) – Toronto – 3/3/99

Recorded 17 years ago this week, this was one of at least three attempts at the Dance CHR format in the Greater Toronto Area during the 90′s. Like many Dance stations in the U.S. over the years, Power 88-5 was limited by its signal, which did not (and still does not) cover the full Toronto market. Please note that this aircheck was recorded from a low-birtate web stream.

CIDC (Hot 103.5) – Toronto – 5/25/97 – Kim Ellison

According to Wikipedia, CIDC (licensed to Orangeville, ON) has been programming some form of Rhythmic-oriented CHR since 1995. This brief sample from the days of Hot 103.5 was recorded 18 years this month. The station evolved to “Hits 103.5″ in February 1998.

CKDX (Power 88-5) – Newmarket/Toronto, ON – 5/2/98 – The Chapman, Diamond Dave

“Dance Radio, Power 88-5” (CKDX Newmarket/Toronto).  Recorded 17 years ago today, this was one of at least three attempts at the Dance CHR format in the Greater Toronto Area during the 90’s.  Includes the end of the weekly “Power 30 Countdown”, and the start of the weekly “Club Freestyle” program. Some static towards the end. Like many Dance stations in the U.S. over the years, Power 88-5 was limited by its signal, which did not (and still does not) cover the full Toronto market.

CKEY (FM 101 the Planet) – Niagara Falls, ON / Buffalo, NY – 3/17/97

Recorded 18 years ago this month, this is a sample of CKEY during its days as a dance-heavy Rhythmic CHR. Most of the aircheck is focused on regular programming; however, some form of mix show (hosted by “Sam The Man”) is heard toward the end (along with a heavy dose of static). CKEY now offers a Mainstream CHR format as CFLZ “2 Day FM”.

CKEY (FM 101 The Planet) – Niagara Falls, ON / Buffalo, NY – 5/16/97 – Jammin’ Todd Edwards

Recorded 17 years ago this month, this is a sample of CKEY during its days as a dance-heavy Rhythmic CHR. During this particular recording, the station was offering live-to-air mixshow programming, featuring many of the great Eurodance and Freestyle hits of the mid-90’s.

CIDC (Hot 103.5) – Toronto – 5/4/97

According to Wikipedia, CIDC (licensed to Orangeville, ON) has been programming some form of Rhythmic-oriented CHR since 1995. This brief sample from the days of Hot 103.5 (pronounced “103 dot 5”) begins with a sample of the syndicated “Pirate Radio” program (recorded 16 years ago today.) My apologies in advance for the particular for the fluctuation in pitch during the final minute. I wouldn’t normally publish a post with this types of audio issue, but made an exception for this one since it’s one of the relatively few Canadian airchecks in my collection. The station evolved to “Hits 103.5” in February 1998.
