WRVQ (Q94) – Richmond, VA – 8/2/98 – Nick Nice

Once a sister station to Y95 (KOY-FM) Phoenix, Q105 (WRBQ) Tampa, and Q106 (KKLQ) San Diego, Q94 is only one that is still on the air with a CHR format. This aircheck was recorded 16 years ago today, but some of the sweepers indicate that it’s “The Year of the Q”.  Does anyone have insight as to what this positioning statement was referring to?  

WAEZ – Electric 99-3 – Johnson City, TN – 7/26/98

Recorded 16 years ago, this is a sample of one of the most uniquely named CHRs around, particularly for the late 90’s, serving the Tri-Cities area in Tennessee and Virginia.  WAEZ continues to employ the “Electric” name today, on 94.9 FM in the same market. Apologies for the heavy dose of static in the middle; the station’s content is still audible.

WHTE (Hot 101.9) – Charlottesville, VA – 4/28/01 – Pauly Madison

Many thanks to Rory Francisco for contributing this aircheck and the detailed description below! Hot 101.9 WHTE launched in February 2001, giving Charlottesville its first CHR in many years. WHTE, owned by Clear Channel at the time, had previously been a jammin’ oldies format, WVSY “Y101.9.” Charlottesville is no longer an Arbitron rated market, but when it was, Hot 101.9 was consistently in the top 5 ratings-wise.  The signal is a class A that suffers from lots of multipath in the area due to the Blue Ridge Mountains, but WHTE has since added a downtown Charlottesville translator on 104.9 and a high quality Web stream and smartphone app that help with reception.
