WWSY 95.9 (Y96 Energy FM) – Terre Haute, IN – 3/18/02 – Bill Cain

Y96 Energy FM offered an unfocused Rhythmic-leaning Adult Contemporary playlist, mixed with an Adult Contemporary presentation. The station apparently tried to capture the audience targeted by crosstown WMGI “100.7 Mix-FM” when it was a Dance-oriented station Mainstream CHR during the mid-90’s. According to indianaradio.net, the station was born 10 days prior to the date of this aircheck, and host Bill Cain was also the station’s Program Director.

This is a sample of the “ZPL Hitzone” mixshow from a Saturday night in May 1997.  This was a high-energy program broadcast live from an upscale beach-themed nightclub (now defunct) named Gators on the fourth floor of the Circle Center Mall in Indianapolis. At this time, the station’s primary voice was the late and great Brian James.

WMGI (100.7 Mix-FM) – Terre Haute, IN – 9/15/00 – Jamie

This is a sample of one of the best CHR stations I’ve personally ever heard. While not as adventurous musically as it had been five years earlier, WMGI still played multiple gold selections from the late 80’s and early 90’s per hour – highly unusual for any station programming this format.

WMGI (100.7 Mix-FM) – Terre Haute, IN – 7/26/97 – Todd Dorn (?)

Recorded 19 years ago this month, this is a sample of Terre Haute’s longtime Mainstream CHR. Compared to its approach from two years prior, the station sounded much more like what one would expect to hear from a small Midwestern market. WMGI maintained this approach three years later.

WSMK (99.1 THE FOX) – SOUTH BEND, IN – 6/13/97 – LARRY DALEY

According to Michiguide.com and Wikipedia, WSMK 99.1 FM has offered various flavors of rhythmic formats since its inception. Reviewing the station’s past Websites via archive.org, it appears that the station has generally had an Urban lean over the years. However, for a period in 1997, it began playing Dance music – including a nearly all-Dance playlist at night, positioned as “Fox After Dark”, as heard on this aircheck.

WMGI (100.7 Mix-FM) – Terre Haute, IN – 7/16/95 – Bryan Thomas

During the mid-90’s, 100.7 Mix-FM was a unique small market CHR, offering a surprisingly dance-music-friendly format. This aircheck was recorded 18 years ago today.

WBBM-FM (B96) & WSMK (99.1 The Fox) – Chicago, IL & South Bend, IN – June 1998

Recorded 16 years ago this month, this montage begins with a sweeper from Chicago’s longtime Rhythmic CHR, B96, during weekend mixshow programming, voiced by the legendary Mitch Craig. What follows is a sample of the eccentric WSMK, which had conflicting positioning statements (“Continuous Hit Music” and “Michiana’s Dance Beat”), yet offered a format that sounded more like Mainstream Urban (for the most part) and a moniker (“99.1 The Fox”) that was more reminiscent of a Classic Hits/Rock station.
