KLRZ (Pirate Radio Z100) – Larose, LA – 1/7/95

During the early to mid-90’s, many Top 40 stations in the United States leaned towards either Rhythmic music or towards Modern Rock. This is a sample of a station with the latter approach – recorded 19 years ago yesterday. According to Wikipedia, KLRZ actually targetted the New Orleans market during this time, with a goal of moving the transmitter closer to that area. However, Hurricane Katrina effectively ended those plans.  

KEDJ/KDDJ (106.3/100.3 the Edge) – FINAL DAY – Phoenix – 10/30/01

Recorded 12 years ago today, this is a sample of the final evening of “The Edge” and its Modern Rock format on 106.3 KEDJ/Sun City, AZ & 100.3/Globe, AZ (along with 106.5 KBZR/Arizona City).  The personality on this aircheck* hints at changes coming the next day, but primarily in terms of his own employment The next day, around Noon… The Edge abruptly moved to 103.9 (replacing Rhythmic CHR “103-9 the Party” KPTY) Spanish-language programming debuted on the former “Edge” signals This article gives behind the scene details about the changes. WTFX (100.5 The Fox) – Louisville, KY – 1999

This is a brief sample of Louisville’s longtime Modern Rocker from its days on 100.5 FM. According to Wikipedia, the station moved to 93.1 FM in 2005. Thanks to Jeffery Holland for contributing!

92.7 WDRE – Garden City/Long Island, NY – 12/6/91 – Doug Frye

This is a sample of the station originally (and later) known as 92.7 WLIR. This was recorded at a time when it was shifting its alternative music focus to a more guitar-based sound, and shortly before the station began simulcasting its programming on a few other signals in and out of its region. KROQ 106.7 – Los Angeles – 5/9/05 – Kat Corbett

This is a sample of Southern California’s longtime Modern Rocker — “The World Famous KROQ” — from the mid-2000’s. The aircheck was recorded over the entire duration the “Flashback Lunch”, but it includes some regular programming as well. Many thanks to Jeffery Holland for contributing!

WENZ (107.9 The End) – Cleveland – Summer (?) 1997 – Ted Kowalski

107.9 the End represented the Modern Rock format in Cleveland from 1992 to 1999.  This aircheck is from a Sunday morning in 1997 (possibly August), primarily during the “Flashback Brunch”.
