WKTU (103.5 The New KTU) – Diane Pryor & WHTZ (Z100) – Billy Hammond – New York – 10/15/98

Both recorded 15 years ago today, this is a sample of the two dominant CHR stations in the largest U.S. media market during the late 1990’s. WKTU offered what we now call a Rhythmic AC format, while Z100, true to its roots, aired a straight-ahead Mainstream CHR format.

WHTZ (Z100) – New York – Jan ’84 – Hollywood Hamilton, Joe Davis, Shadoe Stevens

30 years ago today, New York’s Z100 hit the airwaves for the first time. According to the station’s Wikipedia page, within 74 days, the station had climbed from last place to first place in the ratings.  On this aircheck, you will hear Z100 celebrating this remarkable feat. Please visit our sister site,, for a more detailed tribute to this legendary CHR station.

“WFSH” (Fresh 106) – “New York” – 6/13/97

Fresh 106 was one of the earliest Internet-only streamers. Its high-energy presentation, voiced by the legendary Mitch Craig, its use of the fictional WFSH call letters, the presence of mainstream commercials and the availability of FM-quality streams made it sound very much like a traditional radio station. Reviewing the “FAQ” section of the defunct Fresh 106 Website via Fresh 106 targeted the New York City market, but was apparently based in San Francisco. Musically, the station seemed to position itself between hip-hop/R&B-dominated Hot 97 (WQHT) and recurrent/classic dance-heavy 103.5 WKTU, taking many potshots at the latter. Fresh 106 debuted on 3/21/97. Functioning archived versions of the Fresh 106 website are available through 5/31/02, implying that it ...

WHTZ (Z100) – New York – 5/13/98 – Kid Kelly

Many thanks to Rory Francisco for contributing this aircheck and the detailed description below! 1998 was a great year for Top 40 music and Z100’s renaissance after their ill-fated “alternative” years (late 1993 to mid 1996). Z100 veteran Kid Kelly was hired back as the night DJ in the fall of 1997, replacing Lukas (who went to late nights at Z100 for a few months and  then left to do mornings on KDND Sacramento). Kid isn’t quite as high energy as he was in 1990 (search YouTube for “Kid Kelly Z100” for that incredible video aircheck) but still had very much the same sound as he did in Z100’s pre-alternative days.

WKTU (103.5 the New ‘KTU) – New York – October ’97 – Broadway Bill Lee

In February 1996, Country WYNY flipped to WKTU, offered what we now call a Rhythmic AC format, and went from worst to first in one rating book – an absolutely remarkable feat for any radio station, particularly in America’s #1 market. This is a sample of the station about 18 months after it debut. While this aircheck was being recorded, host Broadway Bill Lee (along with an assortment of lucky listeners) was on-site at a Virgin Megastore for a Janet Jackson CD release party.

Beat Radio (on KIDR-AM 740 Phoenix) – 1998

During the mid-90′s, KIDR (740 AM) in Phoenix was one of several radio stations across the U.S. affiliated with the childrens’-targetted “Radio AAHS” network. Ten of these stations were owned by Radio AAHS. By January 1998, with Radio Disney having launched its own competing network, Radio AAHS ceased operations. They put the ten stations up for sale (KIDR had joined this group not long before the sale was announced). Until a buyer was found, the affiliates (both the AAHS-owned and non-owned stations) aired a mix of random music and paid programming for 12 hours (4am-4pm PT), and all-dance “Beat Radio” for the remaining 12 hours (4pm-4am PT). This is a sample of Beat Radio, recorded at some point during its 8-month run from February to October of that year. Much more detailed information c...
