94.3

WBPM (B94) * Kingston/Poughkeepsie, NY * 1/23/99

WBPM (B94) in New York’s Hudson Valley is one of the most unique stations I’ve ever heard. Musically, it offered an unfocused Rhythmic CHR format that featured many not-so-mainstream Dance selections.  Production-wise, it used dated jingles and sweepers — presumably from the station’s glory days in the 1980’s — voiced by the legendary Charlie Van Dyke.

KSES (Kiss-FM) – Palm Springs, CA (surrounding area) – 8/29/97

Recorded 16 years ago today (on a Labor Day Weekend road trip from Phoenix to Los Angeles), this is a sample of a station that served the area around Palm Springs, CA. “Kiss-FM” originated on KSES 106.9 FM in Yucca Valley, with translators on K232CX 94.3 FM in Desert Hot Springs and K280CV 103.9 FM in Cathedral City. The format was essentially an unfocused but entertaining form of Rhythmic AC, with a Soft AC-ish presentation. I seem to recall hearing that the station was forced to change its name due to its proximity to 102.7 KIIS-FM in Los Angeles; can anyone confirm/deny this?

KMXN (Cool 94.3) – Garden Grove/Anaheim, CA – 2000

For many years, 94.3 FM in Orange County, CA was KIKF-FM (“KIK-FM”), offering a Country music format. Starting in 2000, it cycled through a series of formats before being acquired by Lieberman Broadcasting and switching to a Spanish-language format in 2003. This is a montage of one of those formats, which Wikipedia describes as “Cool AC”.   This entertaining aircheck was recorded during a specialty program known as “Disco Saturday Night”, yet it included a number of interesting Rhythmic Oldies selections from as late as 1989. Many thanks to Jeffery Holland for contributing!
