XHITZ (Jammin’ Z90) – San Diego – 7/4/94 – Nick Monroe

This is a sample of Z90, serving America’s Finest City, recorded on Independence Day 1994.  At this time, Z90 was seemingly one of the most unique-sounding Rhythmic CHRs around; I personally do not recall hearing most of the songs featured on this aircheck anywhere else.

KHTS (Channel 933) – San Diego – March ’97 – Boomer

In September 1996, Channel 933 debuted with a gold-friendly Dance CHR format, as demonstrated in this aircheck from October of that year and this one from November. However, within a few months, the station became much more current-based, replacing much of the classic dance with contemporary R&B and pop.  

KCAQ (Q-104.7) – Oxnard/Ventura, CA – 1/25/97 – Kat Torres

This is a sample of Ventura County’s longtime Rhythmic CHR (now found on 95.9 FM), voiced by the late Brian James. At this time, Q104.7 still offered a relatively balanced Rhythmic CHR format, featuring a mix of R&B, dance, hip-hop and rhythmic gold/oldies selections.

KIBB (B100) – Los Angeles – 11/19/97 (LAST DAY)

With the pending demise of KSWD “100.3 The Sound” later today, here’s a look back at the final day of a previous format/station on the same frequency, from almost exactly 20 years ago. Following the “worst-to-first” performance of New York’s WKTU in 1996, a number of stations around the U.S. attempted similar formats (essentially Rhythmic AC) in their markets. B100 was one example – but the station never came close to achieving KTU-like numbers. It debuted in the Fall of 1996, emphasizing 70’s and 80’s Dance/R&B selections and positioning itself with the slogan “LA’s Hot FM.” Several months later, Viacom sold the station to Chancellor (which became AMFM). KKLQ (Q106) – San Diego – 7/29/98 – Various Personalities (Farewell Tribute)

In the late 80’s and early 90’s, San Diego’s Q106 was one of the top stations in America, offering a Rhythmic-leaning Mainstream CHR format that fit the San Diego market perfectly. KKUU (U-92.7) – Indio/Palm Springs, CA – 7/10/98

U-92.7 hit the airwaves sometime in the mid to late 90’s. Initially, as demonstrated on this aircheck, the station offered a rather unfocused but entertaining Rhythmic CHR format. Over time, the playlist was tightened so that it had a focus on hip-hop and R&B.  

102.7 KIIS-FM – L.A. – July ’93 – Whitney Allen, John Murphy, Rick Dees

“It’s 7 O’Clock on the West Coast at KIIS…K-I-I-S, FM & AM, Los Angeles”.  Voiced by the late and great Brian James, that’s one of my all-time favorite legal IDs, and many variations of it are heard on this compilation from the Summer of 1993. At this time, in celebration of Independence Day, KIIS had a very amusing “Red, White and Balls Weekend” promotion that included liners such as “dangle your balls from your rearview mirror” and “just make sure your balls are visible.” At a time when many CHRs struggled to find success with the increasingly polarized nature of the format, KIIS elected to mix in a number of hits from years past – the station’s slogan at the time was “The Best Hits of the 80′s and 90′s.”

KPWR (Power 106) – Los Angeles – 1985-1995 (various)

On the heels of today’s stunning announcement regarding the sale of KPWR from Emmis to Mereulo Group, we felt it would be appropriate to re-feature an aircheck of this legendary radio station. =============== In early 1986, Emmis Broadcasting flipped 105.9 FM in Los Angeles from KMGG “Magic 106″ (apparently some form of Hot AC) to Rhythmic CHR (then a relatively new format) as “Power 106″.  The station became an instant hit, surpassing heritage Mainstream KIIS  in all dayparts except Morning Drive, where Rick Dees continued to dominnate. KMGQ (which referred to itself as both “106.3 KMGQ” and “Magic 106”) offered an upbeat Adult Contemporary format. More information about the history of the station can be found at Wikipedia.

KBOS (B95) – Fresno, CA – 10/13/90 – Jack Armstrong

This is a sample of Fresno’s heritage CHR from the start of the 1990’s. Quoting from comments made by FMairchecks.com contributor Robyn Watts on another B95 aircheck posted here: According to online records as well as back issues of “Billboard”, [KBOS] was on the air by the late 60s-early 70s with a Beautiful/Easy Listening format. Sometime in the mid to late 70s, the station switched to AOR, adopting the name “The Boss” in the process. In 1983, the station switched to mainstream Top 40 adopting the “B-95″ name. It went Rhythmic around 1987 after KPWR/LA had proven the success of the format. KACD/KBCD (Groove 103.1) – Los Angeles – 9/25/97

In June 1996, KACD-FM (Santa Monica) and KBCD-FM (Newport Beach) switched from a Mainstream AC format to a Underground Dance format known as “Groove Radio”. While Groove Radio was unique, it was perhaps too unique for conventional radio. It never made any sort of dent in the ratings. During the summer of 1997, Groove Radio creator Swedish Egil was fired. The station remained in the Dance arena, but it became more mainstream (better suited for radio) — but not so mainstream that it could truly be considered “cheesy”. The name also changed to “Groove 103.1″, mainly because Egil owned the rights to the “Groove Radio” name.
