WZBZ (B105.5, The Buzz) – Atlantic City, NJ – 3/5/99

In the Spring of 1998, 107.3 WZZP teased Southern New Jersey with a Rhythmic CHR format. With no promotion or publicity, this brand new signal garnered a 2 share (12+) in its first ratings book. Seeing the hole for something between Urban AC WTTH and Adult leaning CHR WAYV, Margate Communications rolled the dice with hopes of being different. Pulling the plug on recently acquired satellite Modern Rocker WDOX, Margate moved the southern half of the Urban AC “Touch” simulcast from 105.5 to WDOX’s 93.1 slot. Rimshotting greater Atlantic City area from Cape May Court House, WBNJ (which quickly became WZBZ) debuted with a Dance CHR format designed to target WAYV, while still protecting WTTH. Within a year, WZBZ moved to 99.3 in Pleasantville, while retaining the 105.5 simulcast as WGBZ, giving ...

WPST 97.5 – Trenton, NJ – 6/20/91 – Barbara Spencer & Mel Toxic

At the start of the 90’s, as mainstream pop music became much more fragmented, many formerly “Mainstream” CHRs chose to lean towards Rhythmic/Dance music, while others (such as WPST as heard on this aircheck) moved towards Hot Adult Contemporary. However, by the end of 1991, WPST had evolved into something perhaps best described as “Rock 40”, similar to some of its neighbors in the Philadelphia region, such as WRFY “Y102” in Reading and WSTW 93.7 in Wilmington.

WHTZ (Z100) – New York – 5/4/99 – Cubby

Generally speaking, at least in the U.S., the larger the market, the less interesting (musically) the radio stations become. Fortunately, towards the end of the 90’s, Z100 — a heritage Mainstream CHR in Market #1 — was an exception to this rule. While the station’s music mix was perhaps not quite as diverse as it had been two years prior, it still stood out among its peers.

WBBO (B98.5) – Monmouth/Ocean, NJ – 3/19/99 – Alan Fox

This is a sample of the original B98.5. Per Wikipedia, the station took on three other identities between February 2005 and September 2010, before returning to its previous approach. The aircheck is hosted by Alan Fox, whose résumé includes a three-year run as Program/Research/Production Director at WBSS “Boss 97 FM” in Atlantic City, NJ.

WHTG-FM (G106.3) – Eatontown, NJ – 11/13/01 – Dave Wetmore

106.3 WHTG-FM Eatontown, NJ was one of first Alternative Rock stations in the nation branded as “FM 106.3” from its debut in 1984 until it was sold to Press Communications in 2000. At that time the station was rebrandedas “G106.3” as a new staff was brought in and a more mainstream sound. G106.3 would eventually add a simulcast on 98.5 and later 106.5 in Ocean County, NJ rebranding as “G-Rock Radio” in the process. The format would meet its demise in January 2009 for a short lived CHR format as “Hit 106” before finding success following its flip to Country “Thunder 106” in September 2010.

95.1 WAYV – Atl. City, NJ – 3/14/98 – Jeffrey T. Mason & Scott Lowe

“Serving the Jersey Shore…” — a great Youtube video aircheck of the Saturday Night House Party on “Arbitron Rated Number 1” station in Atlantic City, NJ.  Hosted by “Jeffro & Lowe.”
